Sight Word Program
The goal is to know all 90 sight words as soon as possible; definitely by the end of the year! When students master the 90 sight words, they are allowed to participate independently in our school-wide Accelerated Reader (AR) program which is a very big deal!
The 90 sight words my students need to know are on 9 different color-coded lists. During the first weeks of school, we will check to see how many sight words each student already knows. Based on this, we will know which list to send first with each student. Most of the children start with the pink list. When we see that they have mastered the the words on the pink list, we give them the green list, etc. We try to listen to the words every Thursday; obviously inclement weather, quarantining, and other changes to our schedule affect this routine. We focus on one list at a time. I will email you when the first list is sent home sometime in September.
We encourage you to to help your child make learning the sight words a priority by practicing the words and by making flash cards.

Bag Book Program
Before the end of second quarter, we'll send home "bag books" with any student who is still working on mastering the 90 sight words. The books need to be read aloud by the student at least 3 times on their own.
1. Bag Books are sent home on Wednesdays.
2. Keep the Bag Book in letter-sized plastic envelope in the back of the Take Home Binder when not in use. The Bag Books cannot get lost or dirty as individual books cannot be replaced. A new set of books costs over $300.00!
3. You should preview each Bag Book by doing a “picture walk”. A picture walk provides information about what the story is about. Picture cues give us clues!
4. Please model how the story should be read using inflection.
5. Help your child as much as needed.
6. The goal is to have your child independently read the story at least three times.
7. Your child will sometimes have a paper to complete. You may help with most of this. Expect your child to complete the art work to the best of his/ her ability (drawing with a pencil and coloring with crayons).
8. Sometimes you will have a paper to complete. This will provide us with information to help individualize lesson plans.
9. Keep papers in the plastic envelope with the book.
10. Bag Books are collected on Mondays. This gives us a few days to listen to each child read and get new books ready.
Once a student masters the 90 sight words, bag books will stop being sent home and Accelerated Reader will be the next step!
Accelerated Reader Program
Once a student has mastered all 90 sight words on the nine lists, Accelerated Reader will begin at home. We do not set a goal each quarter for students participating in AR, but we do expect children to read one book each week. You will need to focus on one book at a time. We will have your child choose AR books during our Library time. The public library also has a large selection of AR books. Each week, your child will read an AR book that is in the 0.5-1.5 level.
When your child is ready to start AR, there will be a pink paper stating that your child is ready to start AR- this will have your child's user name and password for the AR site that you can access from the school site. There will also be a small, pink AR form in your child's Take Home Binder- this is the form you will need to complete and return. When your child has read an AR book, please complete the AR form and send it in on Wednesday (when the Bag Books are due). We will use the information YOU PROVIDE to test your child at school. Once your child has taken the test, a new pink form will be sent home the next Friday. You can check your child's progress by logging onto the AR website (this is the only reason you would need to log onto the AR website).
